WORKFLOW AND NOTIFICATION ENGINE

Intr@vation's Workflow Engine consists of a server side workflow engine as well as a client side viewer applet. The engine currently supports ad hoc workflow processes, such as those represented in a table-based task management application such as Microsoft Project.

The workflow engine maintains one or more workplans in a relational database, updates as a result of client side editing, allows for import or export from or to Microsoft Project.

A version of the workflow engine underlying the Virtual Proposal Center project management features consists of the following fields:
  • Task Number
  • Assignee
  • Duration
  • Actual Start Date
  • Required predecessor tasks
(other task which must be completed
    prior to this task's start)
  • Task Description
  • Planned Start Date
  • Planned End Date
  • Actual Completion Date

On the client side of the application, the workflow is represented as a hierarchical table in which tasks can be grouped under headings and sub-headings, which in turn can be collapsed or expanded for viewing. auto-formatting on date fields is possible, along with notification to other components dependent on the workplan's data.

The Intr@vation notification engine manages user messaging for events related to the workplan. the notification engine is highly flexible; roles, targets, triggers, and actions are all user definable.

The messaging layer currently implements both intra-application messaging as well as providing an interface to common e-mail systems. Examples of triggers include:
  • Task has been completed
  • Start time has arrived
  • Task completion is overdue
  • Predecessors have been completed
  • Task start is overdue
